Aerosol has been known to be a source of significant uncertainties in studies of earth’s climate, which is explained by difficulties in monitoring spatiallyand temporally-variable aerosol properties [3]. The only way to obtain the aerosol particles properties on a global scale is by means of satellite remote sensing. Several approaches to the satellite remote sensing of aerosol particles optical and microphysical properties using measurements of solar reflectance have been developed [4-6]. Despite this multitude of approaches, the AOD retrieval from satellite data is still not satisfactory [7]. The accuracy of remote sensing aerosol characterization is limited by the difficulty to model the optical properties of non-spherical aerosol particles [8, 9]. Earlier on, and in some applications even today, aerosol particles have been assumed to be isotropic, homogeneous, and spherical. With these assumptions one can apply the Mie theory and compute the exact single-scattering properties of aerosol particles. There is sufficient experimental evidence that the non-spherical of aerosol particles can cause scattering properties significantly different from those predicted by the Mie theory. Many research efforts have focused on the improving the accuracy of aerosol retrievals in the presence of non-spherical particles. However, dealing with non-sphericity is not a completely resolved issue. It is a challenge to develop the retrieval algorithm to obtain the microphysical and optical properties of non-spherical aerosol particles using remote sensing data.

Technical Note: Optical properties of desert aerosol with non-spherical mineral particles: data incorporated to OPAC
Mineral particles, in general, are not spheres and so the assumption of spherical particles, instead of more realistic shapes, has significant effects on modeled optical properties and therefore on remote-sensing procedures for desert aerosol and the derived radiative forcing. Thus, in a new version of the database OPAC (Optical Properties of Aerosols and Clouds; Hess et al., 1998), the optical...
متن کاملEvaluation of Polarized Remote Sensing of Aerosol Optical Thickness Retrieval over China
The monitoring capability of a polarized instrument (POLDER) under high aerosol loading conditions over China is investigated. The aerosol optical thickness (AOT), which infers the aerosol burden, is used to measure the satellite monitoring capabilities. AOT products retrieved from POLDER on low aerosol loading days, and products from a radiometric instrument (MODIS) on high and low aerosol loa...

An improved aerosol retrieval algorithm based on the Advanced Multi-angular Polarized Radiometer (AMPR) is presented to illustrate the utility of additional 1640-nm observations for measuring aerosol optical depth (AOD) over land using look-up table approaches. Spectral neutrality of the polarized surface reflectance over visible to short-wavelength infrared bands is verified, and the 1640-nm m...

We present a numerical testbed for remote sensing of aerosols, together with a demonstration for evaluating retrieval synergy from a geostationary satellite constellation. The testbed combines inverse (optimal-estimation) software with a forward model containing linearized code for computing particle scattering (for both spherical and non-spherical particles), a kernel-based (land and ocean) su...
متن کاملRetrieval of Aerosol Fine-Mode Fraction from Intensity and Polarization Measurements by PARASOL over East Asia
The fine-mode fraction (FMF) of aerosol optical depth (AOD) is a key optical parameter that represents the proportion of fine particles relative to total aerosols in the atmosphere. However, in comparison to ground-based measurements, the FMF is still difficult to retrieve from satellite observations, as attempted by a Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) algorithm. In this pap...
